WORDS OF WISDOM

This is what I had for lunch and dinner on this New Year’s Day. For the sake of protecting the environment, our health and respecting lives, please be vegetarian as much as you can.

The fact that this church allows me to give a speech here where Christians go to pray and hear their sermons, and that I am willing to talk in front of a cross and the images of Jesus Christ and his disciples, demonstrate the understanding and tolerance extended to each other by people of different faiths. Harmony among religions can surely bring peace and happiness to all in the world. – At Stanford University.

There is quite a bit of interest in Buddhism in Boulder, Colorado, and mostly this is due to the influence of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Naropa University, founded by Trungpa Rinpoche, is also in Boulder. This school pays more attention to the psychological quality and mental health of its students.

We all hope to be healthy, but we keep on eating unhealthy food. We all hope to be happy, but we continue to hold on to unhappy things. You may not believe in Buddhism or any religion at all, but you cannot deny the emotions and feelings once felt by those animals now being served on the dining table. “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you” should be put into practice starting from our dining tables first.

I visited Shambhala Mountain Center established by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who propagated Buddhism in the West with nontraditional methods. While much of it is not so easy to understand, most of the disciples continue to work on their practices amid various challenges today.

I was invited by Harvard University to give a talk and participate in academic discussions. Boston was as cold as Sertha! I think if the curricula of some of the best schools in the world could include teachings on compassion and altruism, the world would be made a little kinder and more peaceful.
